ABOUT NICE

This section presents practical information about the city of Nice and how to get there.

How to get to Nice?

Easiest way to get to Nice

With the convenience of an international airport only 8km from the centre of Nice, flying is by far the quickest and easiest option. The regular 20-minute bus service that runs between the airport and the city means that you will get to your end destination quickly.

Flying to Nice

The closest airport is, of course, Nice Cote d’Azur Airport, situated just 8km away from the city centre. It is serviced by a number of the major airlines. This wide choice of airlines means that prices are often competitive.

There are two terminals at Nice Cote d’Azur airport, within walking distance of each other. Your airline ticket should stipulate which terminal you are flying in or out of. There is no official signage at the airport to denote which airlines fly from which terminal so you may want to check in advance.

Train to Nice

Nice is connected to the rest of France via the SNCF train network. The TGV, France’s intercity high-speed rail service, runs directly from Paris to Nice and takes approximately 6 hours. Advance reservation for the TGV train is necessary.

Trenitalia train service connects Nice to Italian cities like Milan, Genoa, Rome and Venice. Connections are generally made in Ventimiglia, the first train station in Italy after the French-Italian border.

Driving to Nice

The main advantage to having a car is flexibility and driving in France can be a pleasure. Being able to drive yourself around the area is far more comfortable and convenient, allowing you to take day trips, visit other resorts, towns and villages. Nevertheless, the roads around Nice and along the Cote d’Azur are prone to traffic jams, so travel off-peak if you can.

Sightseeing suggestions & shopping areas

To visit Nice on your own, here are the city’s star attractions and local gems.

Sightseeing suggestions

The famous Promenade des Anglais, once a winter favourite with the English and now the emblem of Nice tourism, stretches for 7km from the Château hill to Nice airport. It is home to two of the city's three 5-star hotels and offers recommended routes from the old town of Nice to the Negresco hotel, passing by the Parc Albert 1er and the Palais de la Méditerranée.

Exploring Nice's Old Town, Vieux Nice, is a top activity featuring narrow streets, colorful architecture, and charming piazzas. The historic district offers cultural venues, Baroque churches, shopping and dining options, including notable attractions like Cathedral Sainte Reparate, Lascaris Palace, Galleries des Pochettes, and the Opera of Nice.
The Colline du Château, to the east of Nice's Promenade des Anglais, offers exceptional views over the city, the Baie des Anges and the Alps. Once occupied by an 11th-century citadel - dismantled in the 18th century - it is now a beautiful park ideal for walks. Accessible by stairs or a free lift at the end of the Promenade des Anglais, it features a surprising waterfall not to be missed.
Place Massena, Nice's main square, is an ideal starting point for city tours. It features the Paillon Promenade and provides a picturesque view of daily life amidst greenery and fountains. The square's distinctive checkerboard pavement, proximity to Avenue Jean Médecin, and hosting of urban events make it a must-visit. Additionally, it serves as a gateway to key attractions in Nice, including the Old Town, Promenade des Anglais, and Castle Hill, showcasing the city after recent renovations.
The Old Port in Old Nice is a must-see attraction, offering a vibrant and bustling atmosphere with ten quays and local markets. Constructed in the 18th century, this port serves as a key infrastructure hub on the French Riviera, catering to both ferry company vessels and private yachts for tourists. It’s an ideal location for a leisurely stroll.

Shopping areas

Nice's Place Masséna is the ideal starting point for a shopping spree, with Galeries Lafayette offering 600 famous brands over 5 floors. Avenue Jean Médecin is home to international retailers, leading to the NICETOILE shopping centre, with 100 shops, restaurants and cultural events.
the Vieux-Nice, the historic district around which the city grew, is an enclave brimming with life both day and night. It is characterized by lively streets and colorful houses. Its charm emanates from the diverse architecture, a range of shops from food outlets to art boutiques, and a variety of gastronomic offerings that showcase the specialties of Nice.
The lively and distinctive surrounding area is home to the Village Ségurane. Here, specialist antique dealers offer an immersion into the past through 18th-century furniture, Flemish paintings, ancient Chinese art and marine objects.

These restaurant suggestions could be useful during your free time on Wednesday and Friday evening.
